Knowing how dress pants should fit is an essential skill to keep in your back pocket. We may be a bit biased, but truly, the one overarching element that separates a killer suit from any run-of-the-mill suit is the fit. Despite what the hipster trends have you believing, not all pants were intended to be worn as low on the torso as your low-rise jeans. For dress pants, a classic rise will leave the waistband sitting at the mid-to-high hip level — so just below your belly button.
Your waistband should be snug enough that adding a belt or rocking suspenders would be a style choice, not a necessity. This pulling is coming from the back because the pants waist is sitting too low. If your rise is too long, the inverse would happen, and your crotch would fall too low more on this area later.
With the rise determined, the waist should be snug enough to allow the pants to sit at the appropriate height for your desired rise without the need for a belt to hold up the pants. So how should suit pants fit in this case?

These are trousers which are smaller at the end of the leg, like the skirts which are smaller around the knee — I hope you understand what I mean. Thanks Imogen — I am an A and I have never felt very good in them but on TV there is a styling show and there they say that these tapered trousers are good as they show that you are not everywhere broad.
THey are fine with tunics, but not with short tops for an A. They will make your hips look larger. Any tips? Brands such as Uniglo are straights, as is Jag.
My other problem is a high hip — so even straight pants fall down too. I really need braces. Just wondering if you have advice on which brands work best with each shape.
I saw a few that you mentioned, but gosh, pants are hard!! Depends where you are in the world — different brands exist all over the world. For jeans Uniqlo can be good for a straighter shape.
Hi, Imogen, I just wanted to thank you for being honest about the O type. A lot of people are uncomfortable with the idea of wearing maternity pants, but I have found them the best, most comfortable option for me. Hi Imogen i am petite and V shape so which trousers are best? Imogen, love your blog and found this article helpful! I am wondering what your thoughts on V shapes and skinny jeans are? I am a very typical V shape in that I pretty much tick all the boxes for that shape!
My hips are very straight, and my legs are muscular so they are not really all that slim or straight…anyway…I have tried and tried the skinny thing, and just never seem to feel comfortable in them. Like unfinished…? Is this due to my shape? Should I really just stick with a bootcut or flare? I do feel sexier in a bootcut, as it seems they give me actual curves on my bum and lower half lol! Alternatively flared or wide leg are best for V shapes.
Can you help me out…? I am kind of stuck finding pants that fit. My recent problem is this, I am a weight lifter and have thick, but toned thighs and behind, which sound great, but now I have trouble fitting my butt and legs into the pants that fit my waist.
Hope this is an option for the body type! Answer: It is best to find a mid-rise or just below the waist to keep the pants up over the hips.
Also, look for a boot cut, flared or straight leg pants to balance out your curvy hips. Stay away from skinny jeans. Hope this helps. Answer: It's best to wear skinny pants so they will fit easily inside a knee high boots. Thanks so much for your detailed comment! I just saw some bell-bottom jeans online.
I want to buy a pair. I haven't had any since ! If people just want to have fun and variety with fashion, they tend to buy into fads and perhaps not worry about what suits them. I say "Good for them! To me, they screamed "Fad".
It used to be that we dressed for balance. That is what you are still suggesting here thanks! Either that or a teeny tiny jacked that shows a boney bum with a saggy pant. Forgive me I'm very visual and enjoy cartooning people both in drawing and in words including myself. Recently a friend in her subtle way not subtle me, however Well, I have very heavy thighs, knees and stomach.
Cute picture, eh? I still like straight legs that are quite tight and show off my round bottom. Also, wide legged if I can wear my high platform shoes without breaking my neck. Oh, and boot cut. I can also get away with cut-offs that stop just below the knee as lower legs and feet are okay. Sorry for essay! Candis, I would suggest a wide leg pant or a gaucho-type crop pant. You could even do a slim leg worn with a stylish tunic. Cropped pants, IMHO are much more flattering than spandex, no?
They stop at an unbecoming place on the calf emphasizing the top of the foot, and what for many women is not a pretty part of their legs. Women who are the least bit overweight look especially bad. Thanks Kawi! I don't know if this Hub will help with your wife's daily wardrobe decision-making process -- I think it is something all women go through. Some days it's easy and other days I have to try on several outfits before hitting on the "right" one! I appreciate the comment and votes.
Take care. Nicely done linda, my wife goes through pants like a windmill - before going to work she makes the mandatory three-outfit-change before settling on something that looks like what she wore the day before. I'll share your hub with her to give her a better insight. Filled with needed info, and written in a friendly and helping tone. Thanks, Nicole! Yes, skinny jeans are not exactly my go-to jeans. I do have one pair and they are not too tight.
I always pair them with a tunic-type top. Glad you stopped by for a read! I appreciate your comment.
